When training to become a makeup artist I underestimated the challenge of creating a bold lip. Sharp edges and defined lines are a must if you are going to pull off this look. Putting on a bold lipstick is one of the quickest ways to add instant drama and sophistication to any look. In this issue I have given some top tricks to a fabulously intense lip.

Top Tips

Apply a lip balm 5-10 minutes before you start. This will ensure your lips are soft and smooth. Blot your lips a few times with tissue prior to applying the bold lip.

Choose a good lip liner and one that matches your natural lip colour and not the lipstick – this stage is about creating a template for the colour.

Use some concealer to help sharpen the edges. I use a flat edge brush to perfect the line around the outer corners of the lips – it really helps to define them. Applying it around the border of your lips will also prevent your lipstick from running or bleeding around your mouth.

For a really intense look you can start by applying a stain before the lipstick. Choose a stain that matches the lipstick. This also avoids the need for constant reapplying. Blot off any access and dust with translucent powder.

Keep the rest of the makeup simple and minimal.

Go brighter for thin lips. Bold lips colours will not be complementary because if your lips are already thin the colour will draw attention to them. You can still wear red, just choose a brighter one.

To avoid lipstick on the teeth, position your lips around your finger and softly pull your finger out. This will remove all the excess lip colour onto your finger rather than on your teeth.

The first rule of bold lip colour is to be brave! Nothing makes a girl pop like a bright burst of colour.

Be bold!
